The main reason is to avoid being accused of plagiarism or unduly borrowing ideas from an author without acknowledging it. Therefore, you should always mention all the sources used during your research. However, you should not add books or other sources to your bibliography list if you have not used them.

There are different ways to cite which have been developed over the years. In general editors tend to use a series of conventions established in the USA, Europe, the United Kingdom or China. Find out which system is preferred by your Faculty or Department.

The APA system or Harvard System is also known as the “name (date) system”. In this system the name of the author is followed by the date of publishing, which appear in between brackets. Bibliographic entries appear in alphabetic order starting with the author’s surname and then the name in capital letters.

Deusto University follows the Chicago system. This system is mostly used in the field of social sciences.
